The Fall of the Divine Order

Divine Shadow had watched the Lexx as it headed out of the Special Projects area.  He had watched the encounter between Kai and Thodin.  Had seen Kai’s              brief hesitation at Thodin’s mention of ‘Brunnen G’.  In less than 24 hours, thousands of years of work by the Predecessors had been undone.  It had been undone by his pride.

He entered the room, and lay on the table.  He was not worthy, he must now give himself over completely to the shadow that dwelled within.

The man was cowering behind the woman.  Had Kai still been human, he would have probably felt disgust at the man’s cowardice.  He readied his brace and was about to take the man’s life when the cry of distress reached him.  His brain, which was nothing more than an advanced computer, immediately switched from the order to kill the heretics to the primary order of protecting The Predecessors.

The moth would be the quickest way to reach the predecessors.  He knew that the odds indicated Giggerota had been killed by the fall, but he was not 100% sure.  Her cannibalistic urges were known throughout the Order.

Entering the chamber he immediately saw the reason for the Predecessors distress, somehow a Cluster Lizard had managed to board the Lexx.  A minor problem that he could handle and get back to his secondary order.  The lizard was swiftly dealth with.

Kai assessed the damage.  A few Predecessors had been destroyed.  He examined them to see if they could be salvaged.  He picked up a bit of brain matter and felt a jolt of connection, a melody in his head.  He knew this melody.  It was familiar in the same way his drawer in the mortuary was familiar.

                “I know that song.”

                “But you cannot remember.”

Kai reached down and picked up the brain cradling it in his hand.  Immediately he felt knowledge that he had been cut off from.  He knew that he was dead and that his death had come at the hands of the Predecessor he now held.  His body reacted on its own, his brain was too busy trying to process the flood of information pouring into it.

Every memory of the predecessor in his hands (and those who came before) was downloaded, evaluated, sorted and filed.  Random snippets immediately registered in his consciousness, the destruction of his home, of Brunnis 2.  He reacted by digging his fingers deeper into the mass of brain tissue.   Finally the Prophecy.  With the knowledge of who he was something else happened.  For the first time in 2000 years, he felt no compulsion to kill at the whim of another.  He dropped the now ruined mass of tissue on the floor of the chamber and returned to the moth.

The body was now controlled totally by Echias.  No other resided inside.  He had felt a change in the Predecessors.  He was sure that his personal forces thought this was about retrieving the Lexx.  The Lexx was the least of his worries, this was about Kai.  He had to be sure that Kai was still under his control.  If not, Vlad had her orders.  Divine Shadow headed toward the Lexx’s bridge.

The two still stood there.  Kai could sense their fear of him, of what he was.  He wished to ease their fears, let them know that their lives were being spared.  For 2000 years he had been the embodiment of a nightmare.  He had killed thousands, but he would not kill them.  He began speaking as he approached:

"I have killed mothers with their babies. I've killed great philosophers, proud young warriors, and revolutionaries. I've killed the evil, the good, the intelligent, the weak, and the beautiful. I have done this in the service of His Divine Shadow and his predecessors, and I have never once shown any mercy."

Kai had been on the bridge and speaking to the man and woman standing there instead of killing them.  And then he disobeyed a direct order before jumping off the bridge into the depths below.  There was nothing down there except the Chamber of the Predecessors, The Predecessors who had already suffered casualties.  Kai could not be allowed to harm another Predecessor, Divine Shadow thought as he floated to the floor hundreds of feet below just in time to see Kai duck into the Chamber.

Kai stood in a half crouch inside the chamber.  The Predecessors were of no concern to Kai.  The assassin was focused on Divine Shadow.  Echias felt only disdain as he sent a surge of energy toward this rebellious creation.  Disdain quickly turned to shock as Kai staggered…but remained on his feet.  It took wave after wave of energy impacting Kai’s body to drive him to his knees.

Echias spun as he felt the Predecessors dying behind him.  The woman and man from the bridge were attacking the Predecessors.  His attention focused on the two allowing Kai to recover and fire his brace.
